Today, March 15 2010, the Dot Com Top Level Domain celebrates it’s 25th birthday. Exactly 25 years ago, the now-defunct computer manufacturer Symbolics Inc, was the first company to adopt a dot com domain name.

Dotcom was one of six original TLD’s that were introduced when the Domain Name System (DNS) was implemented on the Internet in 1985. Although the rise to popularity was initially slow, the dot com name (derived from commercial) was to become the most popular TLD.

Symbolics.com was the world’s first domain name ever registered on the internet. The domain was recently sold to XF.com, a domain name investment firm, and is now used as a personal blog of the owner, Aron Meystedt.

To celebrate 25 years of dot com top level domain name, Verisign has created a site with events and contests at: 25yearsof.com
